New Tech News-Massive takeover by Microsoft
Posted by itispals under Hot n Spicy , New & Just In , New Tech NewsOn May 4th, 2006 at the seventh annual MSN® Strategic Account Summit, Microsoft Corp. announced it is acquiring Massive Inc.Â
The Massive Network represents a complete technology and media solution. The Massive Network brings together publishers, developers, advertisers and gamers, who all benefit from the realism that advertising brings to video games across all platforms. By aggregating the largest audience of gamers and providing real time delivery of advertising across top-selling video games, Massive Network provides publishers and developers $1–$2 profit per unit shipped for their titles. Now Microsoft has announced that it is acquiring in-game advertising network Massive, confirming a published report last week that set the price at between $200 and $400 million.
Massive employees will continue to work from their current locations, including their headquarters in New York and offices in London, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, Sydney, Cologne and Toronto. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition of Massive broadens Microsoft’s commitment to providing advertisers with a highly effective means of reaching specific demographic groups of consumers in the rapidly growing and interactive medium of online gaming. This move would help Microsoft and its advertisers more easily reach “the elusive 18- to 34-year-old male demographic.”
In recent months, Microsoft has been working to capitalize on the booming online advertising market by re-tooling its existing Web offerings and by beginning to offer new ones.

[...] The other day i was having a discussion with my CEO. It did throw up lot of vision into the whole online advertising industry. Then the discussion went on to the more crucial aspect of ROI. Now can ROI be guaranteed in all online advertising campaigns. It is definitely very doubtful. I would even say it is impossible in most cases. Because the way a sale happens on web varies a lot depending on the product that the site deals with. Hence if it is a site that deals with consumer goods/gadgets/gifts it is much easier to calculate the ROI. But if it is a site that deals with software services, financial services, medicare services, real estate services then it is actually too tough to calculate the ROI. There are multiple reasons for this. For example, in the case of software services and software suites, though a visibility can be created by means of online advertisements, yet the actual utilization of services or buying of the suite is a collective decision that needs to be taken at a different level. In this case, the web is primarily used as a tool to conduct research, aiding in understanding the product, know the various features, compare it with identical products, evaluate it and finally submit a report to the management. So earlier the same cycle would have been conducted in a different manner. Sending out the request to different vendors, making them present their services/product offerings, identify their pros and cons, evaluate and finally submit a report to the management to decide. The big advantage that the net has offered in these scenario is the reduction of time and accessibility to a range of vendor services across the globe. Earlier one had to restrict oneself to service providers with in a geographical region, today with net no matter where you are still you can reach anyone. So net has helped to reduce the time frame. Sorry for drifting away, in this kind of a scenario, the actual click might have taken place in April, but the deal may be closed only in december. We are really not sure whether many organizations track this vital information, that would be a vital ingredient to calculate ROI. The news that MSN is gearing up its Adcenter Services and acquiring massive for ingame ad promotions, Indeed, a job search engine introducing PPC, Double fusion buying Eiko Media, just shows to confirm that Internet Advertising Industry is for a big boom in the coming years and is bound to grow. [...] Only last week Microsoft announced its decision to acquire Massive, as a part of its strategy to extend the advertising options for gaming solutions. Now this week it is Double Fusion which has bought Eiko Media. Eiko Media is a focused, niche marketing agency that specializes in both the promotion and utilization of emerging technologies to build compelling marketing and branding campaigns.Eiko Media, is the best bet if one has to reach tech-savvy population. Eiko media is also recognized as one of the first agencies representing console video game publishers in the sale of PERVASIVE, in game brand and product placement media. [...]

[...] One can download the Virtual Earth 3D application in their browser and view these cities. It is not that this application needs to  be used as a stand alone application like Google Earth. The images are captured by a aerial camera and then it is rendered and one should really take a few minutes to realize how good this application has come out. Definitely a product which Microsoft would feel happy about. Now this product gives them enormous advertising potential, because there are billboards and adspaces where any advertiser can buy the space. To just remind our readers, earlier in this year, Microsoft had taken over Massive, a company that specializes in advertisement placements in games. So it is with this technology they are able to offer this service. More over, we believe GeoVector, which is working on 3D search technology, is also closely working with Microsoft. Microsoft probably has its plans clearly chalked out about its Internet Strategy. Till this point of time, news was more abuzz about its Vista products,IE7, Zune and origami. But Virtual Earth throws out lot of possibilities for Microsoft, GPS Service Providers and even Mobile users. The opportunities seems to be plenty. And competition is just getting hotter in this sphere. [...]
