India’s IT hub, the Silicon Valley and Garden City Bangalore is renamed Bengaluru from Today. Today also marks the 50th birth anniversary of Karnataka. It is also on this day kerala and Andhrapradesh, the other South Indian states were formed from the erstwhile state of Madras. The change may take about a month’s time to come into effect. It is just not only Bangalore that has a name change, even Mysore, Hubli, Hospet and eight other towns and cities are being renamed today. Though they may appear to sound different in English, it is how the cities are called in the native Kannada language. So this may sound new to the people abroad, especially to the numerous IT majors and Airlines which have now established a strong link with this city. This is not the first time a Indian City undergoes a name change, earlier Bombay changed to Mumbai, Calcutta to Kolkotta and Madras to chennai, all citing more Indianness to their names. Strange are the acts of politicians because it is only through these moves they wish to showcase their patriotism to the citizens.
