Alternate Energy Sources

The US army has designed and developed a device which is called a Tactical Biorefinery. The tactical biorefinery can be aptly called as garbage fuelled power plant as it uses the garbage to produce power. Though designed by US army for its purposes, the advantage with this tactical biorefinery is that it is even suited for civilian situations, which requires the use of a portable generator. The tactical biorefinery is just about the size of a small moving van. This powerful promising technology has the ability to produce power from several types of  refuse such as  paper, plastic, Styrofoam, cardboard, woodchips and food waste. If the tactical biorefinery works successfully, then the problem of waste generation can be addressed to a great extent. The amount of garbage generated is increasing each day and tactical biorefinery should be the answer to the problem.

The cost of using conventional fuel is getting higher every day. For a country like India, which has been able to make a mark in the International Scenario with its Information Technology, the benefits arised out of this Information Technology exports is more or less neutralized by the high energy costs. Now various initiatives are being tried out for identifying the alternative source for electricity. Jatropha Oil, Tidal and wave energy, Coconut shell are some of the alternate sources that are being tried out for generating electricity.

Alternative source for electricity-Jatropha Oil

“The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has taken up a pilot demonstration project to study the feasibility of producing electricity from jatropha and other non-edible oils in the four States of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh and it has been concluded that electricity can be generated from these sources” reports The Hindu, a leading daily from India. More over, we have also reported in buckleupnow that Jatropha Oil has been tried successfully by the Indian Railways. Even Mercedes Benz has tried Jatropha Oil for its engines and its trials have been successful. Already major plantations have been set up in the state of TamilNadu expecting huge demands for Jatropha Oil in the near future.
Alternate Source for electricity-Tidal and wave energy

Sundarbans is very famous for the mangrove forests. It is here at Durgaduani in Sundarbans, plans for setting up a power plant to harness the tidal and wave energy has been mooted. This is just a demonstration power plant and if it proves to be a success then the chances of setting up of such similar power plants can be expected.

Just as the demand for energy keeps growing, alternative energy sources have to be identified. Probably even these alternative energy sources may not act as a total replacement but may only act as a complimentary source to the existing ones.
