Last month, All the top four search engines, Google, Yahoo, LIVE and Ask have confirmed their support for auto-discovery method for sitemaps. The presence of this sitemap has to indicated in the robots.txt file, which would then help in auto-discovery of the sites. That is, when ever a web site is updated or a new page is added, this would send a message to the spider and the possibility of the pages being indexed increases. Though Google and Yahoo were already doing it, LIVE and Ask have given assurances that their search engines would also follow suit. So now this helps the chances of the website being indexed in LIVE and ASK. This is a welcome move.
I have been using sitemaps from 2006 and i have seen positive impacts with Google.
Here is the example of how your site map should be.
